Potty Training Must Haves on Life, Love and the Pursuit of Play

Potty Training is a big undertaking in any household. I know that for me the excitement about not having to change any more diapers can sometimes get the best of me and I have to remind myself that it’s not just a big deal for me – it’s not even about me at all. The most important thing is to go at my child’s pace, following her lead, ability and comfort level. When she’s ready, I know she’ll let me know, and I will be more than prepared. I’ve been down this potty training road once before, but that was 4 years ago. Not only are my children 2 totally different people, but products have changed in the years since I last did this, so I chatted with the lovely ladies at Boomers and Echoes Kids & Maternity to get their top potty training picks! Here are their 3 essentials to get you on the road to potty training success!

Potty – Baby Bjorn is the clear choice for all your potty needs! From the Smart Potty to the Potty Chair to the Toilet Trainer, Baby Bjorn has an option for every size, ability level and stage of potty training. No matter which style you choose, you can be confident knowing that they are all BPA Free, and all have built-in splashguards that prevents spills. Both potties have a removable inner potty that is easy to empty and clean, with no corners or grooves to prevent dirt from building up. Most importantly, the smooth, rounded edges of the potty chair and inner potty won’t pinch your little one’s skin and the rubber edging along the bottom ensures that the potty chair rests firmly on the floor without sliding about.

Training Pants – A personal favourite of mine, the Bummis potty pant are much slimmer than most reusable cloth training pants. They look like underwear and are easier to get on and off, but still keep messes in with 2 absorbent inner layers and a waterproof outer layer. They are built to fit little ones of all shapes and sizes with stretchy, lightweight side panels which was important to me with my teeny tiny girls. The inner lining is made of natural cotton-hemp fabric that allows your child to feel the wetness, helping them train sooner, plus all their diapers are made in Canada from fabrics manufactured in the US. But the best part? The financial and environmental savings by not using disposable pull ups!

Step – Baby Bjorn is a top choice again with their sturdy, lightweight step stool. The reason why the ladies at Boomers and Echoes love it so much is that not only is it anti-slip on the bottom with it’s rubber edging, it also has an anti-slip upper surface to prevent your child from falling, even with wet feet. The overall design makes the step stool stable and prevents it from tipping over while allowing your child to wash their own hands and reach the toilet, making them feel independent – a key step in successful potty training!

Now that you have the basic items you need for your potty training journey, there are still so many questions about how and when to start, and what method is the best for your child. While the training process is different for every child, there are basic details on potty training that can give you the necessary tools for success! Luckily, Boomers and Echoes is hosting Modern Mama North Shore’s Potty Training 101 workshop, featuring Jennifer Garden of SleepDreams Inc. Jennifer has helped many families with potty training and will cover several discussion points to get you into potty training mode with more confidence. She will talk about strategies that work and encourage confidence in your little ones, building healthy habits along the way. She’ll give you an idea of what to expect during the potty training process, and the signs to look out for on the right time to start potty training. And of course we’ll have lots of time for your questions! Your ticket to this informative night out includes the potty training workshop, sweet and savoury treats from Edgemont Village’s COBS Bread and refreshments.

Dads, partners, and caregivers are all welcome to attend, and  pre-mobile babies can come along in strollers, carseats or carriers.
